There are some new and interesting trends in American cosmetic surgery in 2011. There has been an increase in the number of people receiving plastic surgery, due in part to the improving economy. Also, a recent study of American plastic surgeons’ choices in liposuction equipment and procedures clearly shows that surgeons are opting to go with procedures that have the least rate of complications, which means safer operations for patients. These two trends clearly indicate that people are enjoying the benefits of cosmetic surgery, especially breast augmentation, more than ever before, and doctors are choosing methods to perform liposuction that ensure their patients have the least amount of problems during and following surgery.

A study recently performed by the American Society for Aesthetic Plastic Surgery (ASAPS) found that American plastic surgeons are turning to liposuction procedures and are using liposuction equipment that offer the lowest rate of complications for patients. This study was published in the February issue of Aesthetic Surgery Journal, and clearly indicates that surgeons are opting to use surgery techniques that are less risky for their patients. When performing liposuction, standard suction assisted lipectomy/liposuction was the favored method for removing fat from people by 51% of the respondents. Power-suction liposuction was the second most used procedure, by 23%, for removing patients’ fat. These two statistics show the dedication of doctors to their patients’ safety and well-being.

Plastic surgery has always been a favorite of Americans. This is indicated by their choice to have it even in an uncertain economy. The number of plastic surgeries has risen five percent from 2009. One of the most popular procedures patients elect to have is breat augmentation. This is evidenced by the 296,000 breast augmentation procedures performed in 2010 out of 1.6 million procedures performed that year. Nose reshaping was the second most popular procedure surgeons performed with 252,000 procedures in 2010 out of the same 1.6 million procedures.

Cosmetic surgeons continually try to make their practice as safe as possible for their patients by using equipment and procedures that pose the least amount of harm. Also, people continue to seek cosmetic surgery as they strive to become physically more attractive and correct features that are undesirable to them.
